Whoo – that was good stuff! Although with the salt in the taco seasoning I threw together and the soy sauce, it was a touch too salty.
Oh, and I totally made this in my Dutch oven.
What type of spices would be in a mexican blend?
Usually paprika, cumin, chili powder, garlic. Basically “taco seasoning” like you’d get in the packet but a homemade version. Here’s the one I use: http://www.tablespoon.com/recipes/homemade-mild-taco-seasoning/693fc49a-2aff-44bd-9eff-ad51a5f30f42
What size crockpot did you use? I saw in the intro that you can double this and freeze it, would this affect the cooking instructions at all? Thanks!
Hi Jill–I have a standard-size slow cooker and two batches would easily fit in it. I’m not sure if it would affect cooking time, but I would think 4-5 hours on LOW would still work. Just check it partway through to see how it’s doing. I give mine a good stir halfway through and then mashed it up at the end (along with a half-can of refried beans).
Do you cook the turkey prior to placing it in the crock pot?
Nope–it cooks in the slow cooker. Easy-peasy!
Have you ever put the ground turkey in frozen? If yes, how did you adjust for it? Thanks!
I have not tried this with frozen ground turkey.
omg this was so good! I made this yesterday and my picky family inhaled it! I used 99% fat free turkey and it was yummy!
Thanks for sharing! Can I cook on high instead to speed things up?
Hi Liz–I haven’t tried that but I image you could!
I have tomato paste in a tube and was wondering how much to put in, I dont have a can.
Hi Amanda–You’re looking for three ounces. I did a little research online and it looks like a typical 6-ounce can has about 10 tablespoons, so you’d want to put in 5 tablespoons.
Outstanding recipe! Made these other night and this has become one of my favorite crockpot recipes. The family loved it.
I modified the recipe slightly by adding about half of a yellow onion, finally chopped.
Tip: last 30 minutes of cooking I went in with a teaspoon and scooped out the small amount of standing oil from the turkey.
Great addition with the onion and also removing excess oil. Glad you like it!
