Unhappy With Snacks Given At Camp?

If you’re unhappy with the snacks or meals your child received at summer camp, it’s okay to speak up. Two ways to do this:

  • Contact the director. It can be a polite phone call, an email, or quick chat in person. See below for an email template you can use.
  • Give feedback on end-of-summer evaluations and surveys.

Remember to:

  1. Be kind and complimentary first.
  2. State your concerns politely and objectively. Have specific suggestions, not just complaints.
  3. Offer your help in some way.
  4. Follow up

Sample Script to Camp Directors

Here’s a sample script. Feel free to cut, paste, and customize this for your own needs.

Dear (camp director),

My child is having a blast at camp this summer. Thank you so much for all you do for the kids!

I know the camp has the children’s best interests in mind, so I wanted to touch base with you about the snacks that are being served. I understand the kids play hard at camp and need to refuel between meals. I was hoping you’d consider reducing the amount of chips, cookies, and soda and incorporating things such as bananas and apples..

I understand there may be limitations on what kind of food the camp can purchase and keep in storage, and this may not be a simple issue. But I would love to hear your thoughts, and I’d be happy to help in any way that I can.

Thanks so much for your time!

  1. The Birmingham, AL YMCAs have started providing not only healthy snacks during their day camps and child care programs, but they’ve also started incorporating nutrition education programs. I don’t know for sure if it’s a nationwide initiative or not, but I think it might be. Some of the staff have shared awesome stories with me about the lasting changes the programs have had not only in the eating habits of the kids, but also changes in the eating habits of their families!

    1. Matilda–That is wonderful to hear! I especially love to hear that the education they’re getting at the YMCA is having a positive effect on their family’s eating habits. That is so key to lasting impact and broader change. Thank you for sharing this.

  2. So useful – thanks for a great resource! I was a longtime camper and then counselor at a lovely YMCA camp in Iowa as a child. But every afternoon, we stuffed our faces with as much candy as we could get our hands on–I remember writing a letter to my parents asking to add money to my account so I could buy more Snickers bars. A healthier snack culture really would make a difference to thousands of kids at similar camps.

    1. Thanks for your comment Hanna. I have memories of bright red “bug juice” at sleep away camp myself. 🙂 Since some kids spend many weeks–even the whole summer–at camp, it’s important that camps are part of the positive changes that are necessary to keep our kids healthy today.
