Fresh fruit is a daily fixture in my kids’ lunch boxes–but it’s gotta be easy to eat.

Lunch periods are short, and kids are chatty. So if food isn’t fast, it’s bound to come back home.

Apples are a no-brainer in lunch boxes, but it’s nice to include a variety of fruit to deliver lots of different nutrients and expose your kids to different kinds of foods.

Kiwi is fun and kid-friendly for tucking into lunch boxes and serving as snacks. Here’s a neat way to pack kiwi fruit for lunch.

How to Pack Kiwi for Lunch

  • Rinse the kiwi. You can eat the skin, though most kids probably won’t. Even still, you’ll be cutting through and don’t want to drag dirt and bacteria into the flesh.
  • Slice in half, across the middle.
  • Pack with a spoon (disposable or reusable) so your child can scoop out the sweet fruit inside.

How do you know if a kiwi is ripe?

Ripe kiwi will give a little bit when you press it. If the kiwi you buy are still firm, leave them on the counter for a few days.

How long will kiwi last?

Kiwi will keep in the refrigerator for up to a month.

What do kiwi taste like?

Kiwi has a sweet-tart flavor. The golden variety has a tropical taste.

Is kiwi fruit healthy?

Yes! A two-kiwi serving has more potassium than a banana and more vitamin C than an orange, plus fiber and vitamin E.

What are other ways to serve kiwi?

To slice a kiwi, cut off the ends, then either slice it or peel the skin with a vegetable peeler, then slice. Get kiwi recipes here.

Heres a fun idea for an after-school snack: Peel kiwi, cut into thick slices, insert a popsicle stick or lollipop stick into one end, and freeze on a tray or plate. You’ll get about 3-4 pops per kiwi.

  1. I’m a seasonal fruit kinda gal in my house so at this time of year it’s a rotation of apples, clementines, Florida oranges (around Thanksgiving, we always buy an 80 piece box to support the local high school band) which are staples and then a few specialty fruits to change things up a bit like pineapple, grapes and seeded pomegranates depending on what’s a good price that week. I serve fruit to my little one at every meal so variety is huge. It would be fun for kids to be able to collect the Mighties kiwi upc label in exchange for some of their fun green kiwi spoons! We did that years ago with grapefruit and it was a great encouragement for buying that particular fruit. What a healthy giveaway!!

  2. I usually pack cuties or apples with lunch. I never thought of packing kiwi that way – thanks for the idea!

  3. Liked the FB pages! Had already been following you on fb, but now following the fruit pages 🙂

  4. I also try to stay seasonal with fruit – today it was a mix of orange slices and pomegranate seeds. Excited to try that kiwi with a spoon trick. 🙂

  5. I’m not at the lunchbox stage yet with my son, but I’m looking forward to trying your kiwi pop idea with him. For my husband’s lunch, pretty much the only fruits he’ll actually eat if I pack them are whole Granny Smith apples, red grapes, or sliced-up, under-ripe mangos.

  6. I pack Cuties or Oranges, Bananas, Strawberries, Blueberries, plums and pears, as well as apples

  7. I pack an apple everyday, but I have to say I have an unnatural obsession with cuties. I ate them all the time when I studied abroad in Japan. They’re called mikan there and are one of the only affordable fruits!

  8. Grapes are a staple. Or strawberries, cuties, blueberries. It depends on the kid. 🙂

  9. We are big fans of pomegranates here. My kids also love dried plums and freeze dried fruit.

  10. We love cuties! My four year old can peel them herself so they are great for lunches. My one year old loves them so much that I have to store them out of sight so that he doesn’t get upset when he sees them and I won’t let him eat 2 or 3 at once. I haven’t bought kiwis in a while, I’ll have to get some soon!

  11. I have typically only put grapes, apples, and oranges in lunches because they’re easier to pack. I would love to try these new ideas, though!

  12. I usually pack raisins, dried cherries or halved grapes (toddler).

  13. What don’t I pack in school lunches? My kids are fruitarians. Right now it’s apples, pears, and cuties and occasionally grapes. I honestly had no idea when kiwi season was!

  19. My 10-year-old usually gets strawberry and/or kiwi, but my 8-year-old prefers apples, bananas, or oranges. They’re fruit opposites!

  20. Apples are great for lunches. I like Mighties, Cuties and Real Mom Nutrition. I enjoy your podcast.
    Thank you.

  21. Cuties are my favorite to add to a lunch box this time of year! Their smell reminds me of December more than peppermint or even pine!

  22. I pack apples most often, followed by mandarins, grapes, applesauce, strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon (depending on the season). I normally cut up kiwi for my kids for breakfast, but yesterday I gave them halves with a spoon and it was so much of a mess!!
