A Green Smoothie for Freezer Pop Season

by Sally on March 30, 2012

I will put practically anything into popsicle molds: applesauce, yogurt and berries, the leftover juice at the bottom of a fruit cup. And for the most part, my kids will eat it.

I’m a little late to the green smoothie game. I don’t have a juicer and didn’t think my blender would be powerful enough to handle greens. And I knew that bits of kale or spinach floating at the top of a smoothie would be a deal-breaker for everyone.

But I’m happy to report that my Cuisinart blender did beautifully with this Fuel You Up Smoothie from Kids Eat Right. Sam and I both had a glass, and there was enough left for our popsicle molds.

Plus some extra for DIY Freezer Pops: Pour smoothie into Dixie cups, cover with plastic wrap, and then poke popsicle sticks through the top of the plastic wrap.

Fuel You Up Smoothie
  • 2 cups fresh spinach (put half at the bottom, half at the top)
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup apple juice
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • ½ cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ kiwi, peeled and cut (optional)
  • 1 banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup ice (unless using frozen fruit)
  1. Blend and serve.
  2. Or freeze.
  3. Or some of both.

Then wipe your kids’ faces–because somehow, they’ve gotten smoothie on their foreheads.

Do you have a favorite smoothie or freezer pop recipe–green or otherwise?

This is the final day of my 4 Days of Giveaways! I’m hosting a different giveaway every day.

I don’t know about you, but the first time I made quinoa for my family, they were not thrilled.

Sure, they liked it in these cookies, but straight-up quinoa did not exactly go over like gangbusters (though these quinoa pizza bites are on the menu for this week!).

That’s why I was so excited to sample these frozen whole grain blends from Village Harvest at a food expo last fall, especially the ones that combine familiar grains with left-of-center varieties–like Brown Rice & Red Quinoa and Farro & Red Rice. Even better, most of the cooking’s already been done. They’re pre-cooked, frozen, and ready to heat.

Their frozen whole grains are available at Whole Foods Markets, though not yet in every state. But Village Harvest also makes a line of dry rices and grains that are stocked in many major supermarkets and include Golden Quinoa, Jasmine Rice, and Basmati Rice. (Find out if your store carries them here.)

Today’s giveaway: A coupon for a FREE Village Harvest product to three readers.

To enter, leave a comment at the end of this post telling me your favorite grain side dish. To increase your odds, you can also:

  • “Like” Real Mom Nutrition on Facebook here, then leave me another comment telling me that you did.
  • “Like” Village Harvest Rice on Facebook here, then leave me another comment telling me that you did.
  • Tweet about the giveaway, then leave me another comment that includes a copy of your tweet.

The giveaway ends Thursday, March 22 at noon. I’ll choose a winner at random through‘s number generator.

Disclaimer: Village Harvest provided me with the coupons, plus one for myself.

Soccer Mom on a Mission: The Music Video!

March 5, 2012

By now, most of you know that I get a little feisty about soccer snacks. And t-ball snacks. (Read “Soccer Mom Soapbox” and “That Mom: The Sequel“). I know a lot you feel the same way. (Though some of you don’t.) Last fall, I decided to start documenting the snacks I was seeing on the sidelines of […]

Lessons Learned From The No Added Sugar Challenge (And Why It Didn’t End With Cupcakes)

March 2, 2012

When I embarked on the Two Week No (Added) Sugar Challenge, I thought it would be one of the hardest changes I’ve made. Instead, it was one of the easiest. Easier than exercising every day. Easier than not eating at my computer. So easy that when I hit the two week mark on Wednesday, I […]
